In short

A stair renovation replaces or covers the parts you walk on and see: treads, risers, nosings and landings. The aim is a stair that matches the new floor in species, colour and edge detail. When the stair structure is sound, new wood can be fitted over it; when it is not, treads are replaced.

Carpet to hardwood

The most common stair job we see. The carpet and pad come off, the old treads are checked, and new hardwood treads and risers are fitted. Landings are done in the same wood as the floor so they read as one.

The parts of a stair

Treads are the steps you stand on, risers the vertical faces, nosings the rounded front edges. Illustration.

Capping existing stairs

When the stair is solid but the treads are worn or were never meant to be seen, new wood caps can be fitted over the old treads. This avoids rebuilding the stair. The extra height has to be planned at the top and bottom steps.

Matching the floor

Stair parts come in the same species as the floor and can be stained on site to match. The nosing, the rounded front edge of each tread, is where most wear happens, so we match its profile and finish to the floor.

Railings and pickets

We work on treads, risers, nosings and landings. If you want new railings or pickets, we can plan the stair work around them.

What changes the price

  • Number of steps and whether the stair is straight, turning or curved
  • Capping versus replacing treads
  • Open or closed stringers
  • Stain matching and site finishing
  • Removing carpet and old stair parts

We count the steps and measure each one before giving you a written, itemized quote.

Questions.About stairs in Toronto.

Can you put hardwood on carpeted stairs?

Yes. It is the most common stair renovation. The carpet comes off and new hardwood treads and risers go on.

Can stairs match a new floor?

Yes. We use the same species and stain on site to match.

Can curved stairs be done?

Often, yes. Curved and winding stairs take more measuring and cutting, so they are priced step by step.

Do you install railings?

Our work covers treads, risers, nosings and landings. We can plan around railing work you arrange.
