In short

Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is a printed wood or stone look on a vinyl-based core. Most products are highly water-resistant, which makes them a common choice for basements and kitchens. Laminate has a printed layer on a high-density fibre core; it feels firmer and resists scratches well, but most laminates tolerate standing water less than vinyl.

Vinyl or laminate?

  • Basement over concrete: usually vinyl plank, because of moisture.
  • Kitchens and laundry rooms: vinyl, or a laminate rated for water by its maker.
  • Bedrooms and living rooms: either. Laminate often feels more like wood underfoot.
  • Rentals: both are durable. Vinyl copes better with spills and pets.

What goes underneath

These floors are thin and show what is under them. A dip or a bump in the subfloor will show through or make the planks flex at the joints. We check flatness and level the floor first where needed.

Some products have an underlay attached; others need one added. In condos the underlay must usually meet the building's sound rating.

Subfloor and levelling

How we install it

  • Check slab moisture and flatness, level where needed.
  • Let the planks reach room temperature as the maker asks.
  • Plan the layout so cut rows at the walls are not too narrow.
  • Leave expansion gaps, hidden by baseboard or moulding.
  • Fit transitions to tile, carpet and stairs.

What changes the price

  • The product and its thickness
  • Underlay, if not attached
  • Levelling and moisture work on the slab
  • Stairs and nosings
  • Removing the old floor

Questions.About luxury vinyl & laminate in Toronto.

Is luxury vinyl waterproof?

Most vinyl planks are highly water-resistant on the surface and core. Water can still get under the floor at the edges, so spills should be wiped up.

Can laminate go in a basement?

Some laminates are rated for it. Over concrete, vinyl plank is the more common choice because of moisture.

Can you install vinyl over existing tile?

Sometimes, if the tile is flat and solid and the grout lines are filled. We check on site.

Do vinyl floors need levelling?

Often, yes. Thin floors show dips and bumps, so we check flatness before installing.
